Municipal Budgets

Municipal Budgets

In an attempt to be as transparent to the public as possible, the Corporate Services department provides multiple reports to keep our ratepayers informed of where their tax dollars are being spent and the long-term budgetary planning for the stability of the County. This includes budget reports such as the County’s annual budget reports, the approved budgets, and the operating and capital plans.

Annual Budget Reports

The Annual Budget Report is a summary of the budgeted activities of the County, including details on the County, Strategic Plan and Budget Priorities, the Budget Process, Operating and Capital Budgets, Tax Rates, Reserves, and many other budget details. Note that 2017 was the first year that the annual budget report was generated by Vulcan County, and was recently submitted to the Government Finance Officers Association for consideration of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

Approved Budgets

County Councillors met as a Budget Committee in November/December 2016 and again in March 2017 to debate and recommend the 2017 Operating and Capital Budgets for Vulcan County. The 2017 Operating and Capital Budgets received final approval from Council at the April 19th, 2017 Council meeting. The County’s approved annual budgets are presented in a format that is similar to that of the County’s financial statements; whereas, the County has also provided supplementary budget information for these budgets.

Operating & Capital Budget Plans

The County has adopted a three (3) year written Operating Plan and a five (5) year written Capital Plan with respect to the proposed sections of the Municipal Government Act (MGA), Section 283 (Bill 20, Section 40). County Council decided to be proactive in the creation and adoption of these operating and capital plans, as this increases the County’s transparency and ensures long-term planning for the County and its operations.
