Animal Control
The Vulcan County Animal Control Bylaw and Dog Control Bylaw are enforced by the Vulcan County Peace Officer.
The Dog Control Bylaw lists specific regulations for owners in caring for their dogs. The Animal Control Bylaw lists regulations for owners with any other animals they may care for.
As a rural municipality, Vulcan County recognizes the value of livestock and various animals to local residents and producers. With that in mind, the county has drafted these bylaws to better govern the keeping of dogs and other animals for resident safety and environmental stewardship.
Animal and Dog ownership in Vulcan County
County residents must keep their pets confined to their property or leashed at all times. No owner is allowed to let their pets roam free and become a nuisance to other landowners and passersby.
Dog owners are required to prevent their dogs from:
- Running at large
- Howling excessively or disturbing the peace of others
- Causing damage to public or private property
- Biting, attacking, threatening, harassing, chasing, killing or injuring any person or other animals
- Biting or chasing any vehicle
Vulcan County residents are also responsible for any other domestic animal or livestock in their ownership. Our Officers have Authority to Enforce the Animal Protection Act.
Community Peace Officers patrolling the county continue to enforce the Animal Bylaw and all other Vulcan County bylaws. Animals may be impounded for infractions and owners may face impound fees and or fines in that circumstance.
Vulcan County does not operate a Pound. Animals picked up by Vulcan County Enforcement Services are brought to local Shelters or Pounds decided by available space. This means that dogs impounded in Vulcan County can often be housed at facilities outside Vulcan County.
Vulcan County strongly urges its residents to properly care for their animals and ensure that they are not a threat or nuisance to any surrounding neighbors or properties. Collars/Tags on your Dog with simple contact information could be the difference between your Dog being returned to you in a timely fashion or being sent to be held in a facility outside the County
